For many, carrying on a conversation is natural, effortless, easy.
For those of us that are writers, our best conversations are had in the form of letters, poems, short stories, even text messages.
As a young girl, I remember writing my dad a note and placing it on his favorite chair, asking him if he could go to the store and buy me a new jumprope. First of all, this was hilarious because:
1.) We literally lived in the same house.
2.) I was seven years old.
3.) My comfort in writing over talking was already ever present at a very young age.
My parents bought my first journal when I was in first grade, from Sanrio Surprises at Plaza Bonita in San Diego. I was sold on writing after that, keeping a journal all through elementary, Jr high, and high school.
Writing was not only encouraged, it felt, natural.
At age 13, I wrote about being daddy’s little girl, and the onset of puberty changing our relationship. As I finished reading the story, there was not a dry eye in the house. 9th grade found my ability to write poetry coming to life, as I had a manilla envelope full of them. I recall asking my mother for help as I wrote a one page poem one fall evening in ’92. This was where she introduced the idea of searching for more creative wording; this was the moment I learned, used, and fell in love with the word, semblance.
My 20’s were spent eyebrows deep in life, where I wrote less, but gained myriad experiences that are absolutely pen-to-paper worthy.
My 30’s saw my love of writing come back into play, via blogging and social media.
Now in my 40’s, my love of writing refuses to be downplayed a moment longer, and my 30 + years of writing is indeed in full effect.
